The Olmec Heads Experience: Help Us Create a Monumental Experience for NIU Students!

This fall, something monumental arrived at Northern Illinois University: "The Olmec Heads Experience brings 25 monumental, artist-designed sculptures to NIU, transforming our campus into a place for discovery, conversation, and learning. Inspired by the colossal stone heads created by the ancient Olmec Civilization of Mesoamerica, these contemporary sculptures connect histories spanning thousands of years with the perspectives of artists working today. Thirteen monumental heads have appeared across the NIU campus, along the routes our students travel every day. Their arrival began with a little mystery. Rather than immediately explaining the sculptures, we invited students to encounter them first: to notice, wonder, search, and ask questions. That curiosity is where learning begins.

Now, we want to build on that moment of discovery and create meaningful opportunities for NIU students to engage directly with the exhibition, the artists, and the ideas behind the work.

Seeing a work of art can spark a question. Meeting the artist who created it can change the way a student understands what it means to be an artist, a researcher, a maker, or a participant in a creative community. Through this crowdfunding campaign, we are raising funds to create student-centered experiences surrounding The Olmec Heads Experience. Your support will help bring participating artists into direct conversation with NIU students through artist talks, classroom visits, workshops, demonstrations, and other opportunities for exchange. Funds will provide honoraria for artists while supporting educational programming that connects students with the exhibition in meaningful ways. These encounters are especially valuable because they allow students to experience art not simply as something finished and placed on display, but as the result of research, experimentation, cultural dialogue, creative problem-solving, and professional artistic practice.
